Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment

Picture
Perhaps the most important approach for Custom Care Physical Therapy, Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) guides our treatments. Founded in New Zealand MDT is a treatment approach put forth by the McKenzie Institute. This philosophy is based on a safe, accurate assessment and continued active patient involvement. During the assessment our physical therapists will discover indicators of your condition to continually check and recheck to see how different movements affect your state.
This approach has worked really well for us with all types of musculoskeletal dysfunctions, whether it is a neck, elbow, low back, shoulder, finger, or ankle. We see the best part of this treatment as that you can continue to treat yourself after you left the clinic. As an active, living person you spend a lot more time outside the clinic than in it, so by not having your treatment tied exclusively to the clinic you get a lot more treatment time.

ASTYM

Soft tissue (muscles, tendons, etc.) issues are common. ASTYM is a technique that uses acrylic tools to stimulate the regenerative healing process of the body. By applying cocoa butter to the skin and using the tools to interface tissues, this technique promotes the immunity and repair responses of the body to replace scar or malformed tissue with healthy new layers. The ideology behind this form of treatment has been around for thousands of years with ancient Chinese medicine's Gua sha. Similar soft tissue treatments exist (Graston Technique®, Gua sha, SASTM®), but we prefer ASTYM for its gentle approach and evidence-based results.

Manual Therapy

Meaning "to use the hands" this is where you put yourself in our trained hands to guide the healing process. As a sort of umbrella term, manual therapy can mean a lot of different things: soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, stretching, CranioScaral work, ASTYM, or a multitude of other techniques we can employ to aid your healing.

Therapeutic Exercise

Perhaps the most common and useful modality in physical therapy, exercise is intended to help you rebuild your strength so that you can get back to your favorite activities. Therapeutic exercise can come in a variety of forms: in the gym, with rubber bands or cans of soup at home, in the clinic working against the therapist's pressure, or against gravity anywhere. Whether you have never worked out or are a seasoned athlete we will craft a personalized strengthening program for you and your goals.
